Q&A with Principal Foley

New OLS School Principal – Ms. Judy Foley

It’s a new day at OLS School! Our new Principal, Ms. Judy Foley, started in her new role on July 1. Since day one, she has been very busy implementing new initiatives to benefit OLS students and families in the upcoming 2017-18 school year and beyond.

Below is a short Q&A with Principal Foley, where she provides more details on her exciting plans for OLS!

Can you tell us about your background in education?

For over twenty years I have had the distinct pleasure to serve the Archdiocese of Newark as a teacher of upper grade level mathematics, algebra, and science. I also had the honor of facilitating a course for junior high students, a STEM course, called Synergistics.
The Educational Administration Program at Caldwell University sharpened my focus on the leadership skills needed to help students achieve in the 21st Century era.

What excites you about being school principal?

As a school administrator, it is my plan to provide leadership to enhance the learning in Our Lady of Sorrows School, for each and every student by creating and maintaining an environment where ideas are applauded and flourish. I look forward to synergistically working with the faculty, staff, parents and community, to help students realize their very best not only about their learning but most importantly about themselves as learners. As I look forward to the opportunities that come with each day, I want Our Lady of Sorrows School to be a place where students, and faculty and staff, also look forward to being part of on a daily basis.

Are you happy with your decision to come to Our Lady of Sorrows School?

I knew right from the very beginning that Our Lady of Sorrows School was a wonderful learning community, and one that I would be lucky to be part of. Faculty, families, and students, impressed me immediately with their love for the school. I could immediately align with their desire to embrace change to move forward into the future while still respecting the traditions that have enriched the OLS community throughout its history. It is with much happiness and pride that I welcome the opportunity to assume the role of principal. I want to work to create an excellent learning community here at Our Lady of Sorrows School, awakening the curiosity in each student, motivating them to think critically, enabling them to recognize their talents, and maximize the impact they will have on the world as they go eagerly and confidently prepared into their future.

What are some of your short-term goals for OLS School? Long-term goals?

This school year of 2017-2018 will be one where mathematics at every level will become an area for OLS students to sharpen their skills as problem solvers. Grades Kindergarten through Five, will have a new math series better aligned with the new standards of the Archdiocese to enhance their learning. The upper grades will have the opportunity to get extra help during math clinics which will be held a couple of mornings before school each week.

Language Arts, Literacy, and Reading & Writing across the curriculum will continue to be important areas of focus at our school. I also want to add the services of a school counselor to enhance the services for the students at Our Lady of Sorrows School.

For the school years ahead, starting with the 2018-2019 school year, I plan to have the students at Our Lady of Sorrows School participate in the Archdiocesan STEM initiative where meaningful learning has a cross curricular approach that is rooted in real world applications. I know that OLS students will shine in this area!

I also plan to continue to give our students opportunities to meaningfully utilize technology, developing in them critical skills needed in today’s world.

Continuing to help students grow academically, socially, and spiritually, is at the heart of the goal of Catholic education. An education that is well done also awakens in each student the values that will allow them to be thoughtful, smart, and caring individuals, ready to take on the future challenges ahead of them, creating a better world for all.

What do you hope students and their families take away from their experience at OLS School?

I want students and their families to feel the importance that they have in the school community. I want them to feel a new commitment to Our Lady of Sorrows School as we embark on a new path that will lead us to excellence and a sense of satisfaction. Our Lady of Sorrows School is the place to be and together we have a mission that is of the utmost importance – educating children on a multiple of levels, academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually, to aid them in becoming ready for their future – ready to make a positive difference; ready to be the best they can be!
